(Or, how I found mine after years of illness)

As a busy homeopath and mother, I understand how precious of a commodity time is for all of us.   After detours, mistakes, and years of searching for the healthiest ways of living, I’ve distilled my research and time-tested tips to a simple seventeen. Here are my top all-time favorites.

1)      Stay calm. The world is not as scary a place as the media and other self-serving entities might lead us to believe. When I am anxious or worried I repeat a passage from Psalm 46:10, “Be still and know that I am God.”  To know that God is protecting all of us, gives me inner peace.  No matter who you believe God to be, pray or meditate daily. If you’re Catholic, say your rosary. If you’re Protestant, read your Bible. If you’re Jewish, study your teachings. Don’t miss out on the importance of faith.

2)     Don’t watch TV or spend unproductive time on the internet. After working in the field of media, I learned that it is not in your best interest to be subjected to most forms of media as a steady diet. Protect your children from the barrage as well.

3)     Eat like your great-grandparents did. Eat whole, real, and unprocessed foods. Make your meals yourself from single, basic ingredients. It takes longer, but the rewards are worth the effort. There is something therapeutic about chopping fresh vegetables and creating soup from homemade bone stock. And you’ll earn a reputation as a good cook!

4)     Learn enough homeopathy to be able to treat yourself and your family for life’s little unknowns. The more you know, the more you’ll want to know. Homeopathy is timeless and enduring. At the very least, find yourself a credentialed, experienced homeopath and use his/her services liberally.

5)     Stay away from conventional medications as much as possible. Most meds are dangerous and at best superfluous. Every dubious drug has a healthy counterpart either in homeopathy, in food,  or in an herb (My CD “Homeopathy First Aid: Perform in the Storm” is available on my website).  Learn the safe alternatives and use them with confidence.  Save the use of modern drugs for life-threatening situations only.

6)     Get fresh air and direct sunshine at least 30 minutes daily. Throw out the sunscreen. Have you read the ingredients? Sun screen inhibits your body’s natural mechanism to make Vitamin D and is loaded with chemicals not meant to be slathered on the skin. Instead, if needed, protect your skin the old-fashioned way: a hat, cover-up, and common sense.

7)     Get some exercise. I realize how trite this statement sounds, but after years of resisting exercise myself because of time constraints, I’ve come to learn that I’m more productive and happier when I work out. Even a short walk is good enough.

8)    If possible, keep a garden and animals. A flower or vegetable garden can be a sight for emotionally sore eyes.  A pet can bring a smile to your face. They keep us closer to what is important in life: simple pleasures.

9)     Protect your family and the integrity of the family in our society. That means your marriage and the marriages of those around you. A unified family is the basis of a healthy, prosperous and creative society.

10) Keep your exposure to electromagnetic fields to a minimum. Use the speaker function on your cell phone instead of holding it up to your ear.

11)  Expose yourself and family to the intelligent, creative, and lofty influences of our society. By listening to classical music, reading fine literature, viewing fine art, we are inspired to greatness ourselves. Then emulate and study those who have led successful and creative lives: Mother Teresa, Benjamin Franklin, Gandhi, Churchill, and Beethoven.

12) Keep family traditions.  Whether they’re based on your religion or created by you, they are important for carrying family into the next generation.  If you don’t have any or enough, the way to establish them is by repeating a meaningful activity, time and again.

13) Eat and drink raw dairy products from animals that are pasture fed and preferably organic such as raw sheep’s milk cheese from Italy, raw goat and cow’s milk from France, Denmark, Ireland, and sometimes the United States.

14) Eat organic. At least as much as possible, buy or grow your own vegetables and eat meat from pasture fed animals. In other words, support local, organic, family farms.  Your liver will thank you too.

15)  Include some fermented food or drink with every meal. Old fashioned sauerkraut, pickles, yogurt, kefir, kombucha, fermented carrots, and so on. They provide live enzymes that help us break down the cooked foods we eat. They are excellent for intestinal disorders and are utilized by the healthiest people on the earth.

16) Try to eat raw food at least 80% of the time.   This is not as difficult as one would imagine: drink raw milk, eat fermented and fresh vegetables, dehydrated nuts and seeds,  and incorporate raw yogurt, cheese and butter into your diet.

17)  Do good work. Prepare your food and nurse your family with pride. Whatever it is you choose to do, do it with aplomb, commitment and joy.

These are the tips that have helped me and my family live lives full of vitality and vigor.  What tips have you discovered to maintain your own good health?

It goes without saying: Homeopathy works.

But don’t misunderstand me; this doesn’t mean that homeopathic remedies are indestructible! These delicate powerhouses can be antidoted (cancelled out) by certain items and foods.

And what could be worse than using a remedy that you know is correct and not seeing the benefits?!

It’s disheartening.

To avoid this dilemma, stay away from these chief offenders as they can cancel out the remedy’s ability to act:

Mint,  Eucalyptus Oil, Tea Tree Oil, Oil of Oregano, Strong chemical odors, Strong paint odors, Ammonia and Coffee (if it isn’t a part of your daily habit).

Not everyone has the same sensitivity to these substances; however, it’s best to avoid them entirely when using homeopathic remedies, just to be on the safe side.

Because the remedy’s stimulus is present in the body for at least 5 days after it has been taken, hold off from these antidoting substances for at least that long, so as not to interfere with the body’s healing process.

Just rest assured, though. If you make a mistake, carry on with the schedule as though you weren’t exposed. I say this because it’s difficult to know definitely, whether and to what degree, the remedy was antidote. So it’s best not to retake a remedy after slipping up.  Retaking the dose might introduce too strong a stimulus to the body.

To help prevent little slip-ups from occurring, here are 5 easy ways to avoid the antidotes.

  • Give mint-flavored products a break and give cinnamon, clove or almond flavors, (to name a few) the lime light! Be careful; mint is often hidden in cinnamon flavors.
  • Give mint-flavored products a break and give cinnamon, clove or almond flavors, (to name a few) the lime light! Be careful; mint is often hidden in cinnamon flavors.
  • Instead of mint flavored toothpastes, try Cherry or Anise flavors,  available online or from health food stores.
  • Make your own toothpaste, like we do at home, by using baking soda and cinnamon.
  •  Try moisturizing your lips with coconut oil. You can fill a small lip-balm container and keep it with you throughout the day. (I find mine with the travel-size items in local grocery stores)
  • Enjoy gentler drinks, like herbal teas or this herbal coffee blend.

Occasionally, you’ll find mint in tabuoli, kibi, meatballs and other Mediterranean fare.  In this case, it’s usually so small an amount, that it generally doesn’t cause a problem.

Meanwhile, as the remedy stimulates your body’s ability to balance, you may come to find, that these strong odors are less and less a threat for antidoting a remedy.

Teachers have so much on their plates. More and more, middle and high school teachers are faced with disciplinary problems while they strive to maintain a peaceful environment in their classrooms. One teacher told me that after a long day, she’d come home, lay her clothes out for the next morning and sleep until then, when the whole routine started all over again!

To ensure that you get your much-needed and well-earned Zzz’s, let me offer you a remedy lesson. It could help you become an A+ teacher!

As a homeopathic consultant/educator, teachers frequently come to me for help. Many deal with stress that comes in the form of wakefulness, anxiety or even a nervous stomach.

Sleep can be disturbed when the load of responsibilities and paper work pile high. The remedy Nux vomica can be a gift if you frequently wake at 3 AM and can’t fall back to sleep because your mind is wide awake, thinking of the impending day’s tasks. Those who need Nux vomica can also be plagued with digestion issues such as constipation, bloating, gas and other gastro intestinal complaints. Irritability is a common symptom, too.

It has been repeatedly shown that when Nux vomica 30 is taken four times in one day and then repeated one week later, sleep and calm are restored and gastro intestinal problems melt away.

(But remember, the specific symptoms listed above must be present, in order for this remedy to do its work. A different set of symptoms calls for a different remedy altogether.  This can make choosing a remedy a bit more confounding, but it’s worth all the effort!)

After the correct remedy has been chosen, sleep can be restored and the peripheral issues will melt away. Can we ask for more?

If Nux vomica doesn’t complete the job, a call to a classical homeopath can be beneficial. It may mean deeper work needs to be addressed.  There are literally hundreds of homeopathic remedies available, which have been shown to eliminate stress-related problems unique to teachers. A homeopathic consultant can sort through them to find the perfect remedy for you. And when you learn this lesson, pass it along to colleagues and parents.

Homeopathy is medicine without side effects, is safe and most importantly, it works!

My 18 year old is working in the landscaping business this summer.  He’s in the hot sun all day, and so I worry.  I’m less concerned though, than I might be because I have homeopathy.   And so does he.  Every morning he makes a homeopathic electrolyte concoction  that he carries with him on the job.  Water just isn’t enough in temperatures in the 90’s.

Here’s what Peter drinks all day.  I recommend it to anyone who is exposed to high heat and or excessive sweating.

Peter’s Homeopathic Electrolyte Concoction

  • 16 pills of Bioplasma (from your health food store)
  • 16 pills of Nat sulph 6x (from your health food store)
  • ¼ cup acidophilus bifidus yogurt or kefir
  • ¼ cup fresh lemon or lime juice
  • maple syrup or raw honey, to taste
  • 1 teaspoon Celtic salt
  • ½ cup coconut milk (optional)

Fill the remainder of the gallon with ice water and be sure to shake before each drink. Enjoy!

Homeopathy can be of good aid when burns are at hand.  The best way is to have a homeopathy kit on hand so that instant assistance can be achieved. External sprays, gels or drips, as well as internal methods, will be useful and will all work in tandem. Take the oral remedy every 2-4 hours and stop whenever there is improvement.  External application should be reapplied as needed to keep the area moist and protected.

On a nutritional note, the daily intake of cod liver oil that supports the skin with vitamins A, D and E is very helpful.  Instead of buying synthetic forms of these vitamins, it is more valuable and economical to take this time tested supplement.  Begin taking cod liver oil internally after any burn and continue as a daily fare.

For first degree burns, including sunburn, Calendula salve or lotion will be useful in reducing pain and swelling.  For this kind of burn, Urtica urens 30, taken internally, will aid in the pain and aid in the overall countenance of the sufferer. Take it every 3-4 hours or until relief is obtained, then stop.

Second degree burns should be met with the same as above, but if there is not enough relief, then consider taking Cantharis 30.  It, too, should be taken every few hours and stopped when relief ensues.

Third degree burns should not be addressed with anything topical until after the healing process has been well under way for some time.   It would be prudent to leave the sprays and ointments until after your healthcare provider has given the OK.  Internally, the best choice for pain and the “shocky” feeling is Cantharis 30.  It should be used every three hours or so or until relief is at hand.  If there is no improvement, consider working with a homeopathic consultant. Meanwhile, medical care is paramount.

Electrical burns can be greatly aided by the use of Phosphous 30 taken internally in the same fashion as above.

All homeopathic remedies are gentle and have been regulated by the FDA since its inception in the 1940’s.  Unlike modern drugs, never has a homeopathic medication been removed from the market by the FDA. What methods of medicine can boast such a record? Homeopathy has the ability to grant us more personal empowerment and responsibility via an elegantly simple method of healthcare.  It has been practiced for nearly two centuries and has withstood the relentless test of time and the vicissitudes of many attacks because it works.  There is a timeless quality to real truths.

Homeopathy is the medicine for busy lives. There is nothing like the ability to take care of ourselves and family with confidence and information that we can rely on. Homeopathy delivers that. It is inexpensive, gentle and most importantly, it works. Make it the mainstay of your first aid kit.

“Health is not random” says homeopath, author and mother, Joette Calabrese HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na).  Her book Cure Yourself and Family With Homeopathy and her CDs “Perform in the Storm, a Homeopathy First Aid” and “Secret Spoonfuls; How to get Healthy Foods into Kids Without Getting Caught” are collections of experiences as a skilled homeopathic consultant and mother.   Her lively, entertaining examples and solutions of what to use for the most common ailments a homeopath is confronted with, have graced national journals such as Homeopathy Today and Wise Traditions. Tell us some of the important nutritional basics for nourishing our kids:

The most important basics in the kitchen  are also the most  interesting to kids  so they can easily get involved.   Making raw cultured dairy such as raw yogurt and  kefir are science and life  projects  at their best.  So are fermented vegetables. It teaches kids not only that food has life and can chemically change with  the right inoculants, but it trains them to make something from  nothing.  This is  the way we need to think. If we can learn to make something from a simple raw material, we will become more independent which leads to an admirable lifestyle and robust health. This is one of the fundamentals upon which we, as first-rate mothers need to build.

What else embodies this?  While most will simply throw out the bones and feet of the chicken, venison, beef, I encourage moms to make something  even more nourishing from  what at first glance appears to be nothing.  Bone stocks are the foundation of good respiratory health, joint suppleness, brain  acuity and reproductive vigor. So I entreat moms to make bone stocks regularly.  Then use the stock to make soups, cook their rice in it,  simmer their beans in it, and even boil their pasta in it.   It makes everything we eat infused with nutrient dense gelatin and vitamins that would otherwise be thrown into the garbage.

It’s also paramount that we have snacks available  that are kid pleasing.  On my blog  I make a point of offering snack recipes that fulfill  three standards.  They must  be nutrient dense, delicious  and filling.  Why filling?  So that you can offer them your treat just before they leave for a birthday party or a school function.  When they arrive stuffed to the gills with coconut truffles that are nutrient dense, they won’t find much room for  soda and commercial cake. A full belly  has little interest in junk food.

Tell us some of the fundamentals of learning to treat our children homeopathically:

The more children you have, the easier it is, because it’s a matter of experience.   (‘Another good reason to have larger families!)  But if you  happen to have a small family, I love to share the little tricks that  as a homeopath I’ve gleaned through the years from taking care of so many  families.  One, is to do whatever you can to choose the “right” remedy at the onset.   Then stick with it. Don’t  second guess yourself.  For example, if a child has the croup, stay with  Aconitum for  at least 4 doses to insure that you’ve allowed the remedy to act fully.  If  after 4 doses, there are no changes, then retake the case.  That is;  look at what has come to the fore.  It should be enough different that the new remedy will present itself  via the symptoms.  For example, if a child has a  croupy cough (sounding like a seal barking)and you’ve given Aconitum four times, without any measurable improvement, then you  know that in the triad for croup,  the next remedies to consider will likely be either Hepar sulph or Spongia. What I teach in my audio courses is to be able to differentiate  between these remedies and to know some of their  associated remedies so that you have a pathway to follow. Sometimes the differences can be very subtle. Other times it’s just a matter of knowing the top remedies  of a particular illness.   So, for croup, the top remedies are 1) Aconitum 2) Hepar sulph  3) Spongia.

And interestingly enough, they often show up in that order. The need for Aconitum for croup usually presents earlier in the evening or before midnight, while, Hepar sulph  often  appears after midnight and Spongia  emerges around 3 AM.  This  is just  another tool in determining the  correct choice.

There are other triads as well.  Miranda Castro coined the acronym “ ABC of Fevers” in this way:  1) Aconitum 2) Belladonna 3) Chamomilla . It’s a great way to remember that if it isn’t one, its likely to be only one of  two more.   And if you know some of the characteristics of each, it will fall into place rather easily. This is how I like to teach moms.  Make it easy, easy, easy.

What do you love about your work?

When taking a case,  it’s  the story that makes it  appealing because you  are let in on the intricacies of a person’s life.  Those lovely and sometimes not so lovely idiosyncrasies make it a fascinating  story. Folks share the most poignant aspects of their lives. I get to peer into their religious beliefs, loves and aversions and family dynamics.  It’s a rare opportunity to  get to know other humans on a  deep, private level.  They hand me their pearls  and it is my responsibility to embrace them  with dignity and honor. I  feel privileged being respected and trusted enough to be included.

Then the intellectual excitement is in the cracking of the case;  finding the little clues  represented in the symptoms and exciting causes,  that offer pieces to the puzzle. I usually put together a time line of the bench marks in the persons life so we can gain perspective on what happened  and in what order.  It gives the overall picture  continuity and then we can step back and say “Oh!   The colitis started right after taking those antibiotics!” This gives us a powerful springboard from which to find the perfect remedy.

When it comes to teaching moms how to  gain autonomy in their family’s health,  I become a mom on a mission. My passion is in knowing that others can  cure themselves and their families.   Knowing Homeopathy and high density nutrition has given me such might as a mother, that I can’t help but want to pass on the good word. That’s why I  produce audio downloads  and teach moms online.

As  one who has seen the glaring inadequacies and  condescending attitude of modern medicine, sad modern food choices and  an oft meddling government,  I’m fiercely pro-family.  Being an Italian American, only adds to this stance.   I grew up believing that  your family is the team upon whom you can fully depend.   It means that the curriculum of the family is the most important aspect of life. And within that setting only a mom with the commitment to make her own foods and treat her family as often as she can will become a potent mom.   Mighty mom means mighty family and that means magnificent kids.

What are some examples that are not on your site from your own life or your children’s life that demonstrate the power of this way of eating and homeopathics for healing?

Well , I’ll tell you an incident that occurred only last weekend  to my husband who is a professional ski instructor.  He took a nasty spill, rolled and landed (hard) on the back of his neck. When he finally came to, there was a crowd of concerned skiers and the ski patrol gathered around him. I’m still not sure how he got home, nor is he, but he was clearly dazed, confused and shaken up quite a bit.

Now, since we live on a ski hill in New York, and my family  spends every snowy hour they can on the slopes, I’ve made certain they each have a bottle of Arnica Montana  in their ski parkas.   This time, however, Arnica was not the best choice because of the fact that he was dazed and wobbly, so the pain was not as important as his state of mind.

I gave him  Nat sulph1M  and within half an hour , he grew a smile on his face that indicated the  transformation.  “Thank you” , he said.  “My mind was fuzzy and I felt fragile and confused.”  There are so many incidents in my life in which Homeopathy has given my family and me the kind of power all families ought to have available.

Our son had fear of a big exam that was forthcoming  a few weeks ago but was calmed by Gelsemium  taken every 4 hours. He aced the exam, but more importantly, he was not uneasy the morning of the exam.   A few months ago, my father had a suspicious lump appear only to have Lycopodium resolve it within 2 days.

But the most profound story is the one about my Aunt Mary.  Unfortunately, this one is not  bestowed with a happy ending. Aunt Mary  was my Godmother with whom I was very close. We spoke on the phone  weekly.  Years ago I had given her a Homeopathy kit so she could  call me should she needed my help. Well, one night she slipped  and sprained her ankle.  Normally, she would have called me to get a remedy, but this time, she just went to the doctor without phoning because she knew I had a busy week that week.   I  would’ve indeed recommended she have her ankle looked at to  be certain it wasn’t a break and then a Homeopathic remedy for the pain, swelling and quick healing.

Instead, on the way home, my uncle stopped at a drug store to get Darvon, following the doctor’s instructions. That night, she took the Darvon and within 6 hours, she died in her bed. The “cause of death” was  cardiac arrest, however, no one in my aunt’s very large family had ever had  heart issues and only weeks prior,  she had been given a “clean bill of health” from the very doctor who prescribed Darvon.  Down to my toes,  I knew it was the Darvon, so did my mother and my uncle.  When I reviewed the dangers of the drug online, it was logical that the drug had caused her death.   Now 2 years later, class action suits are sprouting everywhere against the manufacturer.   The FDA has finally banned Darvon and Darvocet. Just for the record, it’s been prescribed since 1957. The reason it was taken off the market?  It causes cardiac abnormalities and arrest in people who don’t have a history of heart disease, even in recommended doses.  How many unsuspecting folks have been poisoned by this drug  in  the last 40 years with the cause of death appearing to be something else?

This kind of loss is always difficult.  But the salt that stung the wound deeper is that  1st, my aunt trusted the doctor to give her  something that was safe and 2nd that the very remedy that would’ve offered her quick and more importantly,  a harmless method of healing was only 20 feet away in her medicine closet…… in her Homeopathy kit!

This is the kind of story that I hear on a regular basis from clients and students  from all over the U.S. As mothers and others, we need to protect our families and the only way to do so is to arm ourselves with knowledge:  Homeopathic and nutritional.  Well, there’s also the protection we gain from holding to our faiths and scrutinizing what is taught in the schools.   But it means diligence.

I entreat all mothers to not be a “good little patient”.  Be the one who questions every decision a doctor suggests and knowing your alternative options.    This is not a time for compliancy.  Be a fierce lioness when it comes to your family.  Be a mighty mom….read, study, educate yourself.  And then get to the job at hand…of being the most protective person in your children’s lives. And when they’re set well, take care of your parents, your aunts and uncles, your friends, pets,  and so on. I can’t think of a responsibility more important than this one.
