There are many homeopaths who don’t offer a glimpse into their lifestyles and choices.

 

I’m not one of them.

 

Instead, I share my beliefs and values on mothering, family traditions, living a natural lifestyle, and cooking nutrient-dense meals in whatever I write, in whatever I say, and in whatever I teach. This includes prayer. I do this because I genuinely believe that’s what it takes to find genuine health.

 

Daily, I meet with clients and students from all over the globe who have made poor choices, usually because the right choice was inconvenient.  Today their health is suffering from those decisions.  More effort is required to seek out health-promoting choices, but the reward is great.

 

This certainly doesn’t apply to everyone, but more and more, I see the ramifications of these poor choices especially in our Western society.  Get our morality straight and health often follows.  Tinker with Mother Nature and the mores and principles of our beliefs, and we will suffer.

 

That, in my estimation, is  why Judeo-Christian traditions hold so much wisdom when it comes to genuine health.

 

I believe the world is hungry for time-honored values.  And to me, silence in regards to this message is irresponsible.

 

I estimate that with this type of message, I will turn some readers off and lose them.  Others will employ these ideas and pass them on.  And  some will simply read and do nothing.

 

For me, it’s a chance worth taking.  I will do whatever I can to spread the truth of how to achieve genuine health.

In case you missed my free webinar, The Five Most Common Mistakes Parents Make in Their Children’s Health, I wanted to share an excerpt from the section on croup.

 

Croup is a respiratory infection accompanied by a harsh, barking cough. Most common in very young children, croup frightens parents because it sounds as if the child can’t catch his breath. This viral infection leads to swelling that constricts the respiratory passages causing very loud breathing sounds. Croup should be carefully watched, and emergency care sought if breathing is too labored, but a parent armed with a little homeopathic know-how and common horse sense can successfully treat croup at home.

 

First, bring your child into the bathroom and place him next to the running shower where he will be exposed to the steam. You should see a modicum of improvement in his breathing after half an hour or so of being exposed to this warm, moist air. The breathing passages will relax and the cough will diminish.

 

Next, select the best fit from the following three homeopathic remedies.

 

When choosing croup remedies, our main focus is time.

 

• If the cough begins just after midnight and your little one is fearful, then the remedy is Aconitum 30. As always, Aconitum is most useful at the beginning stages of an illness and for symptoms that come on suddenly. So if your child has had croup for over 24 hours, it’s unlikely that Aconitum will be of value.

 

• If instead, it’s closer to 2 AM or the cough sounds like a saw grinding through wood, then use Spongia 30. Cold drinks and talking make the cough worse when Spongia is the correct remedy.

 

• A croup cough that begins at 3 AM generally calls for Hepar sulph 30. The child is irritable and the cough rattling. Coldness and drafts make the cough worse.

 

Choose one of the above remedies and administer it every 30 minutes if the cough is severe and every 2 hours if it’s a milder version. As soon as improvement ensues, stop the remedy.  One of the clearest signs that the baby is improving is if he falls asleep.  If on waking the cough returns, continue treatment.

 

There you have it! You’ve just learned how to treat a cough that has frightened parents and baffled emergency room personnel for years. In just 3 minutes, you’ve become a mini expert. You can treat your child’s croup yourself.

I can’t imagine what my life would be like without homeopathy. It has changed my life, and the lives of my entire family, too.

Years ago, I thought antibiotics were appropriate simply because my doctor said they were. I fell for immunotherapy and my allergies were driven to a deeper, more entrenched state. I firmly believed the falsehood that drugs, meds and medicaments were irrefutably valuable.

To think of the poor choices I made all of those years irritates me to this day.  But, instead of getting caught up with my mistakes, let me share with you how I overcame them.

Instead of using drugs, my foremost medicines have long been homeopathy and nutrient dense foods. Thanks to this bold resolution, my family and I took a colossal leap into robust health.  And we’ve never turned back.

Zip, nada, zilch!

It’s that hay fever time of year again.  Not only does springtime bring us bright, cheerful blossoms, but it also bestows upon many of us a not-so-cheerful-time: allergy season.

Fortunately, some of the great minds of homeopathy have taken up the subject of hay fever.  They maintain that it’s the result of poorly treated fevers during childhood and youth.

In other words, hay fever can be directly attributed to the countless doctors, who unknowingly handed out detrimental drugs like aspirin, Tylenol and antibiotics to address fevers in children.  This is what many believe cause hay fever later in life and this is reason enough not to use drugs of commerce when addressing fevers.

Since we can’t return to the past, we must work with what we have.  Luckily for us, we have homeopathy!

Homeopathy is unique because it doesn’t treat the illness, but treats the entire person.  This means that five people with hay fever could receive five different remedies, depending upon each person’s symptoms or how each illness presents.

A homeopathic remedy is chosen based on the symptoms at hand and generally, it’s given hourly, if the symptoms are severe.  If the hay fever is not presenting yet, but is forthcoming, then give the remedy three times per day, every day, during the weeks leading up to it.

The premier remedy to not only prevent the threatening attack, but to subdue one that has already begun, is Mag Phos 6x.

Mag phos is a remedy for spasms, so it will relax the spasms of sneezing fits.  It is best administered in a cup of hot water and then sipped, one sip at a time, every 30 seconds or so.   I like to call this remedy Mug phos because it works so well in a mug of hot water; it is often the only remedy needed to abort a sneezing episode.

If a person craves salt and the sunlight worsens both the sneezing and runny eyes, and if the nose and other associated areas itch, then Nat mur 6x is indicated. This can be taken 3 times per day for maintenance and up to 10 times per day when the suffering is more extreme.

Silica 6x is a remedy for those who have itching deep in the nose, in the back of the throat and deep in the ears.  There is often violent sneezing with tingling in the nose, especially in the morning.  The mucus can be of a burning nature, accompanied by hoarseness and dryness in the throat.  This is relieved by a cool drink of water. All of these symptoms, especially a tickling in the throat, are made worse by lying down at night.  Use this in the same fashion as Nat mur.

Then, there are combination remedies such as Sabadil, made by Boiron. It’s made up of several remedies, all of which are known to address hay fever.   Many of my clients have found relief from it.

We can’t assume that the above remedies will thoroughly eliminate hay fever forever, but they can certainly make enduring allergy season a bit easier.

It’s always worth a try to do this alone, but if complete success is the goal, and there’s an interest in deepening the curative action of homeopathy, contact your homeopath. This way, you’ll get to the bottom of it and prevent it from becoming an annual affair….often forever!

Recently I heard a mom declare, “I wish I had taken my job as a mother more seriously.  My kids might not have the chronic illnesses they suffer from today.”

Indeed.

Preparation for motherhood ought not to be random or casual.  It needs to be faced with the same kind of intent and commitment as getting your PhD.

Understanding how to prepare nutritious meals is key, setting them on the right moral path is paramount and treating their illnesses without detrimental drugs, downright fundamental.

Only a century ago, that’s just what mothers did.  They learned how to treat fever, coughs, injuries, colic and such without bowing to a modern medical paradigm of a synthetic pill for every ill.

Why?  Well, mostly because moms didn’t trust modern medicine.

Do you?

If you embrace medicine of commerce and seek frequent medical procedures, then the information I’m about to present is not for you.

But if you’re like mothers of old or even modern ones, who celebrate their knowledge of intelligent natural health, then read on.

An important place to begin is in knowing how to treat fever. Here’s the rule of thumb when treating a fever….

DON’T!

No aspirin, no Tylenol, no antibiotics.  Why?  Because fever is not an illness, it’s a symptom.  Treating symptoms is what drugs do. And we don’t like that paradigm because drugs don’t get to the root of the problem.  They only eliminate the signs of illness.

“She was convulsing. I was scared and so I had to give her something.”

Even febrile convulsions are nothing to fear in a normal child. In fact, if your child has them and you rush to the hospital, by the time you get there, they’ll have passed. There’s no conventional treatment anyway.  Further, a convulsion is a normal regulatory response which indicates a fast paced fever, not a high one.

“But the fever was already at 105.  I can’t do nothing.”

Brain damage occurs at 107.6 and it is rare indeed when a fever in a child goes beyond 106.  In fact, the higher the fever up to that point, the more capable of self cure.

“But he could barely sleep and it’s hard to watch him suffer.”

Why, certainly fever’s uncomfortable!  So?

Would you suppress vomiting if he had eaten bad chicken?

These are responses required for genuine health.

It is an understood truth of human pathology that fever cures.  In fact, a fever is often employed in uprooting chronic illness.   One of the foundational principles in homeopathy is that chronic illness is often the result of acute illness that has been stifled.

No tinkering with meds.  Just stand back and watch the miracle of the human body find its way to restoration on its own.

In the process, keep your child hydrated. Dehydration is the only true threat accompanying fever. So insist on quality liquids and maintain bed rest.

There are many methods that as a mom, you need to have in your bag of tricks. The most important is how to interpret illness; when to act and when not.

I’ve just returned to Buffalo after having spent a fantastic weekend in Chico, California. There was a great turnout for my two-day, intensive seminar on homeopathy and I couldn’t have asked for a more lively, warm and welcoming bunch! There were mothers, grandmothers, chiropractors, nurses, farmers, a truck driver, teachers, and herbalists.  The vendors were interesting and  informed, and the food was out-of-this-world delicious.

My mouth is watering just remembering the beautiful cheesecake and acorn squash soup. All the foods were locally sourced, organically grown and true to Weston A. Price principles. I’d like to send a heartfelt “Thank You!” to Carol Chaffin Albrecht, the chapter leader for the WAPF chapter of Chico-Butte and all the wonderful folks who made my family and me feel welcom and appreciated.

And because I loved  the meal so much, I thought I’d share a recipe I’ve found for the delicious cream of acorn squash soup.  I can’t say that it will be as good as what the talented volunteers prepared, but it’s likely to come in a close second!

You’ll need:

• 2 acorn squashes, halved and seeded •   1 medium onion,  cut in half •  6 tbsp. unsalted butter • 1/4 c. flour (which can be coconut flour or gluten free,  if necessary)  • 5 c. bone stock • 1 c.raw heavy cream • Celtic Sea Salt to taste • Freshly ground black pepper to taste •

Here’s what you do:   On a buttered surface of a Dutch oven , bake the squash and onion until soft. Scoop out the meat from the squash and discard the skin. Put the squash back in  the Dutch oven, add  the stock and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for about 10 minutes. Add raw cream, and salt and pepper to taste. Continue stirring until just heated through.

Man, oh man…….Chico I’m coming back!
